Educational Games Strengthen Mother–Child Bonds Through Independence Day Celebrations in Sempu, Banyuwangi
The laughter of children and cheers from local residents filled the neighborhood of Sempu Village. The lively atmosphere marked the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, celebrated by Yayasan ALIT Indonesia’s Banyuwangi branch. The occasion served as an opportunity to strengthen national pride while supporting children’s optimal growth and development. Through strategic collaboration with the Sempu Village Government and the Sempu Village Family Welfare Movement (Tim Penggerak PKK), ALIT Banyuwangi organized a series of educational and traditional activities involving children enrolled in its Early Childhood Development (ECD) program and their parents.
The activities were designed not merely as annual entertainment, but also as a way to nurture nationalism and appreciation for the contributions of Indonesia’s heroes. The activities were selected to address different aspects of children’s development, including physical and motor skills, cognitive abilities, and social-emotional development. The competitions included traditional games, educational games, and quiz competitions that encouraged active collaboration between mothers and children. Children and residents also worked together through gotong royong, decorating and beautifying their neighborhood.
The integration of traditional games into the celebration aimed to foster pride in local cultural heritage amid the rapid pace of modernization. Meanwhile, educational games and quizzes provided an enjoyable way for children to learn about history and develop their understanding of national identity. This approach attracted considerable interest from the wider community. The competitions were not limited to children participating in ALIT’s ECD program; students from early childhood education centers, kindergartens, and elementary schools across Sempu Village also took part. Many parents and children from outside ALIT’s regular programs were drawn to the event because of its unique combination of play, community participation, and educational content.
For children supported through ALIT’s programs, participating in these shared activities had a positive impact on character development and psychosocial well-being. From a parenting perspective, involving parents directly in the activities provided an effective opportunity to strengthen emotional bonds with their children while increasing parents’ awareness of the importance of early stimulation for children’s growth and development.
To sustain the spirit of togetherness and active participation that has been established, ALIT Banyuwangi is preparing follow-up activities at Rumah Adat Paseban Luhung and in the surrounding community. A range of activities—including educational games, storytelling, screenplay activities, cooking classes, and gardening—will continue to be held regularly.
Through this Independence Day celebration, ALIT Banyuwangi hopes to continue strengthening parents’ capacity to practice positive and supportive parenting. Building collective awareness among village stakeholders about the close relationship between child and family well-being is an essential foundation for sustainable community development.
