The post-earthquake recovery period in Flores requires comprehensive attention. Beyond addressing trauma recovery, it is equally important to meet children’s basic needs and protect their health. Disasters often damage essential infrastructure and disrupt families’ access to daily supplies. As a result, children’s nutritional intake and access to essential resources that support their growth and development can quickly decline if their needs are not addressed promptly and appropriately.
As part of its commitment to protecting children’s rights and health in Nitakloang Village, Yayasan ALIT Indonesia has provided essential daily-use supplies, including food containers and reusable drinking bottles. These items are intended to support clean and healthy living practices while ensuring that children have safe and hygienic containers for carrying nutritious food and drinking water throughout the day, particularly when they are at school or participating in child-support activities.
In addition to providing physical assistance, ALIT Indonesia also organized a family-based nutrition education program through a Cooking Class attended by 16 parents. The cooking session was designed to equip mothers with practical knowledge of how to prepare nutritious and affordable meals amid the challenges of post-disaster conditions. The activity also fostered a spirit of social solidarity. Nutritious meals prepared during the training were distributed directly to the homes of supported families who were unable to attend the activity in person.
The distribution of assistance and support activities in Flores has not been without challenges. Field teams have faced geographical barriers, including considerable distances between the settlements of supported families, as well as limited community participation that has prevented the program from reaching everyone comprehensively. Beyond these operational challenges, conditions on the ground indicate several urgent needs that remain unmet, particularly access to clean water due to the absence of an independent water distribution system. There is also a growing need for umbrellas to protect children and families from the extreme heat currently affecting the area.
To strengthen family resilience in affected communities, ALIT Indonesia is committed to continuing its support programs on an ongoing basis. While remaining vigilant about the possibility of aftershocks, the team will continue to closely monitor basic needs in the field. The combination of essential facilities, family nutrition education, and targeted assistance provides an important foundation for protecting the health, nutrition, and safety of children in Flores throughout the post-disaster recovery process.
